USE OF HINARI DATABASE BY FACULTY STAFF OF COLLEGE OF MEDICINE, UNIVERSITY OF NIGERIA, ENUGU CAMPUS

Abstract

This paper investigates the usage' of Health Internetwork Access to Research Initiative (HINARI) database for health information by Faculty staff of the college of Medicine University of Nigeria, Enugu. Sixty questionnaires were distributed and fifty four (90%) returned. Findings indicate that staff of Community Medicine are the highest users (16.67%) followed by Pediatricians (14.81%>), Obstetricians and Gynecologists (12.96%) and Medicine (9.26%). Also 77.34% of the respondents can use the database well, 22.66% indicated not very capable. The database was mostly used by researchers (37%). Those who use it for teaching and conference/workshop followed with 14.81% each.33.3-3% do not use the database regularly. (66.67%) use it when the need arises. It was also found out that the use of the database was more for reprinting articles for home reading (64.81%).This was followed by those who read only the abstract (27.78%). Response from respondents shows that HINARI database is an invaluable tool for research especially for developing countries.
